The gods are angry.
Volcanic eruptions, sinkholes, ground shakers—everything points to their unhappiness. At least that is what the king of Armania believes. His son, Prince Wilek, thinks his father's superstitions are nonsense, though he remains the ever dutiful First Arm of Armania.
When a messenger arrives and claims that the town of Farway has been swallowed by the earth, the king sends Wilek to investigate. But what Wilek discovers is more cataclysmic than one lost city. Even as the ground shifts beneath his feet, Wilek sets out on a desperate journey to save his people and his world. But can he do it before the entire land crumbles?

Set in a fantastical otherworld with medieval trappings, Williamson's epic novel, consisting of previously published standalone stories, is a cataclysmic journey of good and evil that combines classic fantasy with a spiritual tale of redemption. Williamson's ambitious undertaking comes complete with a map and list of characters (from king to slave) that will serve readers well as they navigate Prince Wilek of Armania's quest to find out what is causing the "fall ins," or caving of lands into the Lowerworld. Wilek also battles at home as he and brother Janek jostle to position themselves as heir to the throne of Armania. They will have to come together if they want to protect the throne from the sorcery of high priest Rogedoth. Sharp dialogue and lively action drive the story. Fantasy lovers who don't want to wade through gratuitous violence and sex will be glad to find Williamson (By Darkness Hid), a modern fantasy writer whose work is fit for the more pious Christian market and the many teens looking for epic stories with spiritual underpinnings. Volcanos, earthquakes, and other physical disturbances are tearing the world of the Five Realms apart. The King of Armania believes that the gods are angry because his citizens commit wrongful deeds and worship the evil horned god Barthos. When the people hear of a prophesy of "The Deliverer" who offers redemption, they fear Barthos will destroy them if they turn to another deity. Prince Wilek must prove Barthos is a false redeemer and convince his people that the one true God is Arman, who will deliver them from their sins and lead them to the promised land. VERDICT Williamson ("The Blood of Kings" trilogy) crafts a complex and vividly portrayed epic fantasy reminiscent of George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series but less edgy and with a Christian worldview. Loosely following the events in the Old Testament, the author depicts a society in which paganism and superstition are deeply ingrained prior to the coming of the Savior. This volume includes the first three parts that were originally published as ebooks: Darkness Reigns, The Heir War, and The End of All Things.
