The New York Times bestselling aftermath of Halo: Combat Evolved featuring the Master Chief—part of the expanded universe based on the award-winning video game series!
2552. The theocratic military alliance known as the Covenant is showing no mercy as it continues to assault every human world it encounters, but in the way lies humanity's greatest champion, the super-soldier Spartan John-117—the Master Chief. Together with his AI companion Cortana and the last remaining Spartans, the galaxy-spanning fight rages on two fronts following the destruction of the human military stronghold Reach by Covenant forces and the mysterious artificial ringworld known as "Halo" at the hands of the Master Chief.

One faction—a squad of Spartans lead by Blue Team's Fred-104 and Kelly-087—is trapped on the glassed surface of Reach, the only planet they've ever known as home. And beneath this ruined world, Dr. Catherine Halsey has discovered an ancient secret...one that could alter the course of the war. Meanwhile, the Master Chief and Cortana lead a second group toward a gathering of Covenant warships, as the United Nations Space Command's worst nightmare has finally come true: the Covenant has discovered the location of Earth and is forming a massive fleet to utterly destroy it, as well as all who oppose the indomitable will of the Prophets...

GHOSTS OF ONYX expands Halo, the world created by Microsoft's Xbox game. This surprisingly strong adventure translates well to audio, complemented by Jonathan Davis's steady narration. He traverses the human versus alien world of military operations and weapons acronyms with precision and mitigates the sterile military setting with warm, human tones. As the superhuman Spartan warriors attempt to capture Onyx technologies, Davis successfully weaves the plot's many threads, creating a cohesive, gripping story. The only drawback to this audiobook comes from its numerous flashbacks. Each episode is introduced by date, but the timeline is hard to follow. In the final scenes the stories merge, ending the confusion. Patient listeners will find GHOSTS OF ONYX a suspenseful interstellar ride. C.A. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine

The next chapter in the popular Halo series, which is based on a video game, relates the voyages of a star cruiser led by Captain Keyes as it lands on a mysterious planet. Without the sound effects or background soundtrack that have become the standard in modern sci-fi productions such as the Doctor Who series and the revisited L. Ron Hubbard serials, this production falls flat from the start. Narrator Todd McLaren gives a mediocre reading that is below his usual standards. He sounds bored and withdrawn. Hard-core fans may find enough to keep them interested, but most listeners will be disappointed. L.B. (c) AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine

In the 26th century, humankind has taken to the stars and is warring against powerful aliens. Humans fight using spaceships, nuclear weapons, and super-soldiers: people who have been transformed by science into stronger, faster, highly adaptable warriors. THE FALL OF REACH follows one soldier as he strives to prevent the destruction of the human race. Todd McLaren narrates with such passion and energy that he brings the sometimes-clichéd story to life. Growling in the voice of a drill sergeant, whispering in the voice of a worried female scientist, portraying a scrappy child, or smoothly narrating passages of faux-technology, he completely sells the story and makes the listen eager to hear if the humans will survive to fight another day.
