Be the Change

Robin Greenfield's Call to Kids—Making a Difference in a Messed-Up World

ebook

1 of 1 copy available

For young readers ages 8 to 12, an inspiring, lively guide to sustainable living from YouTube star and zero-waste activist Robin Greenfield.
Features kid-friendly information on the highly popular movement towards zero-waste living, as well as information on the climate crisis and solutions.
Robin Greenfield loves this planet, and he's willing to go to extremes to show kids how our way of life is causing it harm. He's walked around New York City dressed in his own garbage, cycled across the U.S. on a bamboo bike (three times), and survived one year on food he foraged or grew himself. For Robin, it's all worth it: he brings attention to important topics like food and water waste; our dependency on fossil fuels; our piles of stuff (and the energy required to produce it); and our disconnection from community and the wider world.
In this uplifting book, Robin uses his own experiences—backed by solid information and a ton of great ideas—to show kids that no one is too young to make a difference, and no action is too small to make a start.
Robin will donate 100 percent of his proceeds from this book directly to environmental nonprofits.

Grades 4-6 Adventurer and activist Greenfield embraces environmental sustainability in this nifty handbook that focuses on nine related subjects: stuff, waste, food waste, the food system, water, energy, transportation, money, and connection. He devotes an eight-page chapter to each, with each chapter employing a common format: the first four pages give essential information, the next two feature Greenfield's related adventures, and the final two offer commonsense ideas about what readers can do. For example, the chapter on waste reports that the average person creates 1.63 pounds of trash a day, most of it problematically going to landfills. What did Greenfield do? He wore a suit made of his trash for 30 days to attract attention to his cause. What can readers do? Set up a compost bin, buy unpackaged food, purchase used stuff, etc. Most readers will find his adventures of the greatest interest: riding a bamboo bicycle across America, not showering for a thousand days, being a dumpster diver, and more. Highly illustrated with photographs, charts, and graphs, this salute to sustainability works for both individual reading and classroom use.

Gr 4-8-As a longtime environmentalist, Greenfield wants kids to know that they can make a difference. In this volume, he touches on environmental topics like food waste, water, and energy issues affecting our planet today. Each section contains ways that Greenfield has helped the environment himself, followed by smaller get-started ways for students to do the same. Readers who are interested in environmental topics and want to help will be inspired. Greenfield leads by example, and kids will look at his ideas and see that they can help out, too. Many of his suggestions are easy and small, and thus manageable for young readers to embark on independently. Readers will be drawn in by the full-color photographs that make large statements throughout the book. VERDICT An inspirational addition to any nonfiction section in an elementary or middle school library. Perfect for those who want to know more about how they can help the environment and inspire change in their communities.-Elizabeth Pelayo
