The next adventure in the High Republic begins expanding the new era of Star Wars, with a story set generations before Light of the Jedi.
It is an age of exploration. Jedi travel the galaxy, expanding their understanding of the Force and all the worlds and beings connected by it. Meanwhile, the Republic, led by its two chancellors, works to unite worlds in an ever-growing community among near and distant stars.
On the close-orbiting planets of Eiram and E’ronoh, the growing pains of a galaxy with limited resources but unlimited ambition are felt keenly. The two worlds’ hatred for each other has fueled half a decade of escalating conflict and now threatens to consume surrounding systems. The last hope for peace emerges when heirs from the planets’ royal families plan to marry.
Before lasting peace can be established, an assassination attempt targeting the couple tilts Eiram and E’ronoh back into all-out war. To save both worlds, Jedi Knight Gella Nattai volunteers to uncover the culprit, while Chancellor Kyong appoints her own son, Axel Greylark, to represent the Republic’s interests in the investigation.
But Axel’s deep distrust of the Jedi sparks against Gella’s faith in the Force. She’s never met such a puffed-up, privileged party boy, and he’s never met a more self-serious, relentless do-gooder. The harder they work to untangle the shadowy web of the investigation, the more complicated the conspiracy appears to be. With accusations flying and potential enemies in every shadow, the pair will have to work together to have any hope of bringing the truth to light and saving both worlds.

This title has a frustrating incompleteness about it. The listener knows that much came before, and much will be resolved later. It seems that Anakin Skywalker's (aka Darth Vader's) grandson, Jedi Jason Solo, is being lured to the dark side of the Force-the Sith side. It's a family drama featuring most of the surviving central characters-Master Luke, Han, Leia, and their children. Reader Marc Thompson does not attempt to impersonate the characters, but rather to speak for them in their intonations and pacings and accents, but with his own well-controlled voice. As always, the sound effects-intercoms, light sabers, laser cannon, John Williams's music--are understated and highly effective. D.R.W. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, two familiar rogues become embroiled in a quest to save civilization from certain doom. Marc Thompson, Daniel Jos Older, and January LaVoy co-narrate a story that spans 20 years and 12 (or so) parsecs. Having three narrators helps to keep the story's three timelines distinct: Thompson narrates the bulk of the story, which takes place now, while Older narrates Han's flashbacks, and LaVoy narrates Lando's. Each narrator captures the personalities of the characters, with Thompson in particular doing near-perfect impressions of Han, Lando, and Chewbacca. The familiar sound effects and music add to the immersive experience, and, more importantly, capture all the excitement of seeing STAR WARS for the first time. After THE FORCE AWAKENS revitalized Star Wars and launched a new film trilogy, THE LAST JEDI arrived as the thoughtful, challenging second chapter. The novelization, and the audiobook in particular, further enriches the story. Top-notch production values, ambient sound effects, and the iconic orchestral music immediately immerse the listener in a galaxy far, far away. And Marc Thompson holds nothing back in his spirited narration. Amid the thrilling space battles, Thompson dials up the humor, emotion, and drama while expertly portraying the film's indelible characters. A curious exception is Finn, the stormtrooper turned rebel fighter, whose voice does not match his defiant personality. Overall, though, this production expands on the film and delivers hour after hour of delightful listening. A.T.N. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine
